“I could have it in my room. I could feed it biscuits. I would love it more than anything!”

Flynn jabbered away about the rabbit, now called Gwen, that he wanted to cuddle all night to sleep. Micky responded with delicate hums. A completely negative response to Flynn’s long list of wants resulted in more asking. A more noncommittal humming sound made Flynn think he was getting somewhere, so the less he asked. But by less, that was still a fucking lot compared the average child who had already been told no to a pet on more than one occasion.

“Meds, Flynn,” Micky said and stuck the syringe into Flynn’s mouth.

They were back home from having spent most of the day at the farm, followed by Jason’s treat of McDonald’s, which Flynn would be deliriously happy about for days. To him McDonald’s was truly the golden arches paved with more gold, puppies and, probably now, rabbits. It was his mecca. He didn’t eat anything in it—Flynn rarely ate. But the plastic tat toys were his obsession. The noisier and more wind-uppable, the better. And today’s ninety-nine-pence delight was some character from the recent kids’ film that wound up and back flipped like no other. Except, of course, for the twenty million Flynn already had scattered around the house. Amazing how something so cheap could last for so long. iPhones didn’t last that long. Which reminded Micky that he now owned one of those.

Flynn took his medicine and jumped into bed, grabbing the nearest soft toy and squeezing it.

“When can we go to the farm again?” Flynn asked as Micky tucked the duvet up to his chin.

“Maybe in the summer, when it’s warmer,” Micky suggested.

“Can Dan come next time?”

Micky stopped. He held down the duvet and glazed over. The mere mention of the name had Micky’s heart rate elevated and stomach churning into tight knots. He’d known it was foolish to bring Dan into his brother’s life. Normally, his escapades took place far away from his brother and anyone else who would know him. Why he’d let that slide for Dan was something Micky was having trouble figuring out. He suddenly felt guilty and had to swallow down the lump forming in his throat. It was just because of the way he’d treated Dan. Not nice to be practically kicked out of the house the morning after without even a cup of tea offered.

“Micky?” Flynn asked and placed a delicate little hand on Micky’s cheek.

“Sorry, kid. I don’t think Dan likes farms,” Micky replied. He took Flynn’s hand from his cheek, kissed the palm and tucked it back under the duvet.

“I’ll ask him. In the morning,” Flynn said and shuffled down farther under the duvet.

“What makes you think he’ll be here in the morning?” Micky asked, standing.

Flynn gave a huge yawn and rubbed at his tired eyes. “You sleep better with him.” He closed his eyes, hugged the teddy bear tighter and sank into the pillow.

Micky leaned down and kissed his brother’s cheek, ruffling his hair.
